Gen 7- Chapter 3: Sunlit Zest

“So explain something to me please.”
“Alright.”
“How is that you still get lost? I have shown you around town a couple dozen times now?”
“Well… it’s a big place, and you know it so much better than I do.”

“Uh huh. You know what I think?”
“What’s that?”
“I think you kinda like hanging out with me, and you use this as an excuse.”
“You’re wrong.”
“Oh am I?”
“Yes.”

“I don’t kinda like you… I like you a lot.”
“Ah. I think I might kinda like you too.”

“Sunny I don’t like this guy. He’s bad news. We should go now.”
Ughhh Blaze was yappin non stop. It was hard to tune him out. I tried, but when someone is blah blah blah in your ear it’s insanely difficult to be alluring. Which was what I was shooting for.

“So you and I…”
“Yes?”
“I was wondering if maybe…”
“Sunny Don’t! You don’t understand! This guy! He isn’t who you think he is!”
I shook my head subtly hoping Cedar wouldn’t notice.

Before I had a chance to get that kiss… My body started to tingle.

“Sunny? Are you okay?”
I watched in horror as once again I was shoved to the passenger seat. My hand reached up and took hold of the hair on top of Cedar’s head. I tried to scream but nothing came out. With a *rip* there was a wig in my hand.

This was not happening!

“Wha!!! What did you do that for?!?!”
“Im sorry!!” I squealed. “I was…wait.” My stomach turned over. Suddenly it all made sense. “You!!!” I bellowed! “It’s you!”
“Sunny… I can explain.”

“No way!! I don’t want any explanation from you!! Get out of my face!”

“Sunny please! Will you just listen?!”
“No!”

I started to run, run as far away as I could. My heart was broken two times over. Once by an old bully and the other by my best friend. I had never been so angry in my life.
Gen 7- Chapter 2: Sunlit Zest

Normally it wasn’t my usual routine to hang around the neighboring park after school. Since the passing of my grandfather though, life at home was almost unbearable. Every where you turned someone was crying. It was awful. It made it impossible for me not to cry right along with them.

Homework had also gotten progressively more difficult. It was hard to concentrate on anything when your mind is in mourning mode. It didn’t stop me from trying. I would sit with my book every day after school till I got it right, but one not so special day, I had one more distraction to add to my list.

“Excuse me? May I sit here?”
I was so engrossed in my algebra, I just nodded and continued to scribble down formula solutions.
“I hope I am not intruding, but I am new to the area, and you looked like a cutey that I needed to say hello to.”
I nodded again.

“My name is Cedar. Cedar Pomegranate. What’s yours?”
This guy did not take a hint.

After realizing this guy wasn’t just gonna go away, I hastily dropped my notebook on the bench. I started to say something really not so nice, when my eyes finally caught a glimpse of my new companion.

Berry, was he cute!!

Suddenly my words were stumbling forth from my mouth. “I’m Sunli- Sunny Sunlit Zest.” I shook my head. “No, that’s not right. My name is Sunlit Zest, but everyone calls me Sunny.” That was a little better.
“Sunny…It suits you.”
“Thanks.”
“I hope I am not being too forward, but seeing that I am new here, do you think maybe we could go out sometime. Maybe show me what you like to do around Honey Sprigs? Right?”
“Sure. That sounds fun.”

We exchanged numbers, and then he said he needed to get back to his house for dinner. I asked if he needed directions on how to find his way back, but he was pretty sure he could find it.
“Will I see you at school tomorrow? It’s my first day.”
“You sure will. Maybe we will get a class together.”
“I’d like that. See you later Sunny!”
“Bye, Cedar.” My heart did a little skip as I uttered his name.

“He seems nice.” I sighed happily as the handsome figure walked away.

“I don’t like em…”

Gen 7- Chapter 1: Sunlit Zest

It was a bad day. A horrible rotten day. Just when I thought I understood how the world worked, this horrible day came along and changed everything.

Oh but what did I truly know? I was only 9. I pretty much had the whole world ahead of me to learn what was truly going on, but at the time, I thought I knew it all. I had my best friend, what else did I need?

Nothing. He was always there for me. Looking out for me. When the bully at school who I thought was my friend, started talking about me behind my back, Blaze made sure I knew.

I was so hurt and angry. How could he. We were just starting to become great friends, but then, the horrible awful things he said… I don’t even want to repeat them. I felt utterly betrayed, more so because I really liked him, a lot.

What right did he have to say anything about me? I never once mentioned his bald head, or oddly shaped face. Ohhhh if it weren’t for the fact my momma raised me better, I would clocked him square in the middle of his goofy glasses. Instead I settled for a tongue lashing.

Thankfully after that, everything settled back down. Burnt Coffee Bean’s father was a high up mucky muck and they sadly had to move away.

Life went back to normal after that. Blaze and I had always been inseparable, but one day there was something he wanted to try. I wasn’t to sure about the idea at first, but I decided to go for it. Blaze said there was a way he could “take over” my body. Just for a few seconds…

Once I had agreed, my body started to tingle. I was suddenly watching myself move from the passengers seat. I was roaring like a dinosaur and all kinds of other weird things. Then just as quickly it was over.

I felt terrible after. My head was pounding and I knew I was going to throw up.

“I did not lilke that at all.”

“Awww but it was so fun!!”

“Maybe for you…”

We made a pact that day. We would never try that again. It felt creepy and I hated it. To top it off, I made a promise to never forget him.

Promises we never broke…

Best Friends…

Forever.

Gen 6- Chapter 12: Leaf

“Dear, I do believe there is something going on with our daughter.”

“Lemon? What’s wrong with her.”

“No not Lemon. Sunny.”

“Oh alright, so what’s happening?”

“I am not exactly sure. She has been talking… strangely…”

“To who? You? Mom?”

“No…herself.”

“Oh.”

“She’s up in the girls room right now, telling ghost stories to no one. Not just little stories either, really gruesome, in depth, takes a good thirty minutes to tell stories.”

“At first I thought she was talking to Lemon, but she kept saying Blaze. Blaze this. Blaze that, and on top of all that, Lemon was fast alseep.”

“Same thing is happening at bath time, and I know for a fact no one is in there.”

“I see.”

“You don’t think there is something a miss in her head do you?”

“I’m sure there is a good explanation, I will talk to her tomorrow.”

And talk to her I did. The very next day, after her arrival home from school, I found her in the backyard dancing as she always did. This time, she was also giggling and talking to herself.

“Hello sweetheart.”

“Hi Dad!!”

“Can we go inside for a chat please?”

“Okay!”

“Love we wanna ask you something. Lately you have been talking about Blaze an awful lot…Who is this Blaze?”

“Blaze is my friend.”

“Oh.”

“You can’t see him though.”

“He lives in the hamper under my bed.”

“So this Blaze. Do you see him often?”

“Duh mom, like everyday.”

“You mean you think you see him?”

“No. I see him. There is no thinking. He’s here right now.”

I looked around the room. “There is no one here love.”

“Dad! I already told you. You can’t see him. Only I can.”

“Ugggh we don’t have time for this! We’re gonna be late for school. Bye Mom! Bye Dad!”

“Be careful!”

Gen 6- Chapter 11: Leaf

Grandma did make it to see the birth of her second grandchild…

But it was not long after that, that we had to bid our goodbyes. RIP Grandma.

The house yet again, was a in state of utter turmoil. Mom, took the death extremely hard. Goldie did her best to pick up the slack. but her cooking, bless her soul, could never stand up to my mothers. It was edible though, so we ate it anyways.

Sunny did her part to take care of the household as well. She was pretty broken up over grandma’s death as well, but she put on a brave face for her little sister.

She stayed by her side for several weeks, just to make sure she would be alright.

Best big sister ever.

Yes, we loved our little girls, but I know secretly Goldie was wishing that our third child was a boy.

She got her wish alright. The same night as my birthday.

My little man and I would share the same birthday.

Little Citrin.

Gen 6- Chapter 10: Leaf

A lot of things seems to have in a very quick succession when a small child is involved. Before we could blink, Dad was celebrating, right along with Sunlit.

Of course Dad had a good amount of years on our little Zesty poo. Still I thought he looked well for his age, though it made me start to worry about Grandma, I hoped she would make it to the birth of our second child.

Goldie decided to have a little talk with Sunny, to make sure she was ready for the new arrival. We didn’t really have to worry, she was already preparing new songs in her repertoire to sing to her.

Then it was time for the big day! Sunny’s day! We all gathered around the cake for the huge celebration. Goldie had a funny kick, but she assured me it was nothing.

Nothing. turned out to be labor pains. The smoke hadn’t even cleared off the candles, before I was rushing Goldie to the hospital. Happy Birthday Sunny…

She did not seem to mind. Mom says she went outside and did a little bit of dancing to past the time. The girl sure did love music.

We brought home another healthy baby girl. Lemon Stardust. I couldn’t get over how much she looked like Dad. Same complexion, same hair, but her eyes were definitely Goldie’s.

“Do you think she will like me?”

“Of course she will. You are her big sis, she will adore you.”

“I hope so. I have so much I want to talk about!”

“Well you may have to wait a bit for that, but I am sure soon enough you can.”

Two darling daughters, my life was complete. Life didn’t get much better than this.

Gen 6- Chapter 9: Leaf

Sunlit Zest, was a little ray happiness, that we were so berry blessed to receive. I do believe all that love and contentment my wife had cultivated towards the end of her prgnancy (after that horrible day) was channeled straight into Sunny. I had never seen such a happy baby. Course she was the only baby I had ever seen, so I guess that is unfair to say.

There was something so very strange about her. When it came time for her to start learning how to talk, she wanted nothing to do with it. She would smile and shake her head, but she wouldn’t even try. Finally after a couple 100 hours of research, I found an article that suggested singing instead of talking. Well we were desperate…

It was hard at first because, let’s just say I didn’t have the best voice.
“You are my Sunlit. My only sunlit, you make me happy, when skies are grey, you never know dear how much I love you, please don’t take my Sunlit…”
“Awaeeee!!!”
“Very good angel!”
“heeee!”

Everyone in the house adored her, and I had a feeling there was nothing that my Grandmother valued more than the chance she had to spend with her greatgrandchild.

“I love you sweetheart.”
“I love you grameeeee.”

Ah the life of a baby. It’s hard to split up your time evenly with your adoring fans. Mom had to practiacally fight Grandma off to get to her sometimes, not it a violent way, just a little bit more pushy to get her point across.
“My turn! Oh who loves her little Zesty poo! I do! I do!”
“Heheheh!”

Dad was the smart one, he chose to take bedtime duty. Which was always close to the same time and he didn’t have to fight for it, because eventually she did have to sleep.

“No said the little blue cub, I want to sleep in my own bed tonight. But your bed is too cold said momma blue bear…you will have to wait to stay here tonight. The little blue cub was sad, it wasn’t fair…”

When we learned that we were pregnant with our second child, we were excited, another little bundle of joy to have around the house.
Gen 6- Chapter 8: Leaf

I wish I had known she was behind me. I wish I had known what the reporter was about to say. If I had perhaps my wife could have spent the rest of her life not knowing, sadly she was, and I didn’t.

“Sad news today, the Fondant Fields mogul Brut Champagne, has died. He was found dead at his estate at 8:45 last night. Autopsy has not yet been preformed, but is suspected to be of natural causes. A memorial will be held Saturday, not in Fondant Fields, but Honey Sprigs. His final wish was to be buried nearest his only living relative, who was never named.”

I heard her gasp and my heart sank.

“He knew. All this time and he knew exactly where I was.”

“Maybe it was somone else.”

“No, this is just like him. A way to get back at me. Let me know, he won again… I…I can’t believe this!”

Goldie ran up the stairs to our room, as quickly a 7 1/2 month pregnant woman can, that is. I immediately went up after her. Never before in my life, had I wished, we hadn’t owned a TV.

“You alright love?”

“No.”

“Do you want to talk?”

“Not yet.”

“Okay.”

This was just what we didn’t need. Life had been tough enough around the Licorice household already, we didn’t need anything else to add to it. I was doing double duty trying to keep everyone together.

Grandpa passed away, and no one in the house was taking it very well. My poor grandma worst of all. I did what I could to comfort her, but for the most part, it was a lost cause…

A couple of days passed before Goldie finally came to me.

“Would you drive me to the cemetery? There is something I need to do.”

I didn’t even bother saying yes, I grabbed my keys and guided my dear wife to the car.

She stared at his headstone for a long time before the words ever came. I stood back, she needed this, without me.

“Hey Dad. I know you don’t like me calling you that, but I am going to anyways… *sigh* I can’t believe you would do this. After all this time, you knew where I was, and you never said anything.

How could you. Do you have any idea how much I needed you. You were all I had! AND YOU JUST LET ME GO! I hate you! I know I shouldn’t say that because you are dead, but I do! How could you leave your only daughter like that! I——muuu—-ji—”

There was nothing left for her to say after that. She dropped her head into her hands, and started to cry. That was my cue. I rushed back to her side and held her as close as I could.

“Why didn’t he want me?!”

“It’s wasn’t your fault. It was his. You did nothing. Please believe me, there is nothing you could have done.”

As hard as it was to for Goldie to go through, closure was exactly what she needed. From there she was so much happier, all the time. Almost a spring in her step, that i had never seen before. We were finally free to celebrate the arrival of our baby girl.

Thank goodness, because is happened quickly.

Before long at all, we were welcoming our sweet angel into the world. Little Sunlit Zest Licorice.
